The Youth Rally

The lead story on the front page of last Thursday’s VOICE, entitled “No Schools’ Rally?” was written from information received at the time, that the Youth Rally, for years the main event highlighting the Independence Day celebrations, would not be taking place this time around.
We have since learned that some last-minute scrambling in order to effect damage control and rectify this horrendous omission from the programme, has resulted in some more-low-key-than-usual event of that sort will be held following the Independence Day parade, on the playing field at LaClery.
There are several rumours circulating about the reasons why the event (the Rally) had been originally omitted from the programme – poor allocation of funds, bad planning, lack of foresight – but at this period in our Country’s evolution, the Powers That Be, by missing out on the opportunity to make the most of the Youth Rally, have committed one of the worst blunders possible.

Why? Because at this period, when Police, CAPS, Ministers and Ministries of Social Affairs, Youth Development etc., Church leaders, Civic Group leaders … every “knowledgeable” individual functioning within the folds of our social organizations are bemoaning the fact that our young people (who seem to have shouldered the bulk of the task of perpetrating the violence that has become so rife, it is on the brink of destroying the social fabric of our communities) are now bereft of pride – personal and national pride – we almost missed out on one of the most significant and inspirational demonstrations of national pride and unity involving those very young people.
Thank God that some last minute arrangements were made to have some kind of function involving the youth. It is to be hoped that whatever takes place somehow manages to inject some inspiration into their spirits, and that they do not dwell on the realization that once again, they were not considered too high a priority when the adults were formulating their plans.
And if they subsequently showed some resentment at once more being apparently forgotten and sidelined, who could blame them?
