Quality … better than Quantity?

Crime, crime, crime. The subject has taken predominance over everything else in our St. Lucian society.
The majority, who now live almost in a state of perpetual fear, are desperately waiting to hear of some kind of strategy on the part of the authorities to help ease the tense conditions that constitute existence in the country.
The authorities are holding all kinds of press conferences, in an endeavour to reassure the population that they are getting things under control, but – as can be seen in our story on page two of this issue – matters just seem to be going from bad to worse.
There are calls being made to recruit more police officers in order to put a greater number of them out on our streets, but … is that really the solution?
Perhaps not, if the greater number consists of more of the same: new young people of mediocre calibre who are willing to join the Force simply because they cannot do any better.
The main educational criterion, we understand, to become a member of the Force, is to have passed five subjects at the CXC level. Is it not time to raise the bar and employ young people who are a bit more qualified, say those who have undergone some level of tertiary education? In other words, “A” level instead of “O” level students?

It would seem that, for the same amount of money (if salaries were doubled in order to attract a higher calibre of applicant), two hundred more qualified officers would be more useful than four hundred less qualified ones?
With more highly-trained minds, the organization would probably stand a better chance of solving and preventing crime (some of which is probably planned and perpetrated by “A” level graduates who cannot find employment on the job market and therefore resort to illegal means to make a living), than restricting itself to employing only applicants who, because of their lower levels of education, are willing to accept the relatively-lower salary levels.
It may be something for the Powers That Be to consider. Perhaps it is time to look at enticing a higher level of applicant at the entry level into our Police Force, even if it means a smaller number in order not to increase the cost to the public purse, and begin to exchange quantity for quality.
What have we got to lose? Things cannot get much worse.
