Concerns about a political goon squad

The following piece was submitted by one of our readers. We print it in its entirety, as we wholeheartedly concur with the sentiments it espouses. The subject of crime, especially violent crime is fast becoming the main concern of every law-abiding citizen, as the situation worsens with every passing day:
“Having read the article in the Crusader January 30, 2009 captioned, ‘Is there an armed political goon squad in Castries’, we remain extremely concerned if the facts stated are indeed correct. If one hundred fire arm licences have been distributed to individuals of questionable character, this further accentuates our concerns.
“At this point in time the Commissioner of Police needs to come out openly and clarify this statement, more so as the Crusader pointed out that a general election is just two years away and the last thing we need at this time is an increase of firearms on our streets, as statistics have shown that once a number of fire arms have been received by one political side, the other side will soon arm themselves.

“St Lucians from every walk of life need to firmly distance themselves from any form of lip service and provide an unbiased contribution to help the authorities responsible for providing security to fair Helen. Dealing with five homicides in one month is totally unacceptable, especially as the Talk Show Hosts have been addressing the issue for months.
“Our inquiries have revealed allegations that these firearm permits were issued by a top cop who acted as Commissioner for a short period. Regardless of who issued the permits, if the present administration has concerns about the recipients, the Commissioner of Police has every right to recall the relevant firearms. St Lucia: we need to get serious and act decisively.”
We reiterate: our sentiments exactly.
