The Silly Season … Already?

Last weekend, the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) held a constituency conference in the Babonneau region.
On Sunday of this upcoming weekend, the United Workers Party (UWP) holds what it bills as a “massive National Rally” in Soufriere.
On all fronts the two main political parties are scrambling to put endorsed candidates for the upcoming (constitutionally due in approximately fifteen months) General Elections.
The somewhat mysterious (it holds no public meetings, has not made public the identities and number of its candidates and the public has, to date, little indication of the size of its support base) third party – the Organization for National Empowerment (ONE) has shown no sign of stirring itself up in preparation for the campaign trail.

However, the signs being displayed by the SLP and UWP … holding events where their followers will once more take the red and yellow tee shirts, flags and banners out of mothballs and begin to vociferously state their opinions, chant their slogans and wave from the backs of their pickups and flat bed trucks, while playing their loud carnival-esque music, devouring chicken legs and swilling beer and rum, means just one thing:
No matter that the actual election date may be fifteen months (or even more, if the incumbent party chooses to opt for going to the maximum allowable limit) away … the Silly Season has begun.
God help us!
