Sandals Foundation Involves Guests in reaching out to Local Community

Mere months after thieves made away with several computers at the Balata Government School, a visiting Sandals couple from Canada has come to the rescue by replenishing the institution’s lab. Derrick and Doris Harrison, who visit Sandals Grande and Regency every year have to date, donated over fifty computers and one thousand books through the Sandals Foundation for similar projects around the Caribbean. During a small ceremony recently at the facility built by the Sandals Foundation sixteen years ago, the Harrisons say that they look forward every time to give back to the people of the island.
“St. Lucia has been one of our favourite vacation places and every time we come here the people of St. Lucia treat us so well. So it is a pleasure to do this for the children of the island,” Said Derrick.
The donation which also contained books and school supplies was well received by teachers and students at the facility. Sandals Halcyon has had a longstanding relationship with the Balata school which spans some fifteen years, and was able to construct and maintain a computer resource center and library which caters for the two hundred and fifty plus students of the school.

“I feel that we are alive again!” says acting Principal Mrs. Theresa Dujon, “I don’t know if you know this but recently we were the victims of a robbery. They took everything from our computers and televisions to our adapters. This donation came at an opportune time. We are so thankful for the generosity of the Harrison’s and to the Sandals Foundation for making it happen. These computers enable us to teach the students various aspects of using a computer and the internet safely.”
The General Manager of the Sandals Halcyon Resort, Mr. Lennox Dupal was pleased with the impact the contribution of the Sandals Foundation has made to the children of the school.”Over three thousand students have passed through the halls of this institution from the time we adopted it almost 16 years ago. A lot of former students from this very school now work for the three Sandals resorts here thus underscoring the significance of tourism impacting our community,” explains Dupal.
