The
Miss World Pageant- More viewers than FIFA World
Cup!

Apparently,
the Miss World Pageant has a television viewing
audience of over 2 billion people and according
to Microsoft, the Pageant’s website is
one of the most viewed sites on the www!
This year, the prestigious Miss World pageant
celebrates its 60th year and the final will
take place on Hainan’s Island in the People’s
Republic of China on Saturday, 30th October.
Over one hundred countries will be represented
by their ambasadors of beauty who will spend
one month in the host country visiting chinese
cities like Shanghai, Beijiing, Ordos (Inner
Mongolia) and partaking in a number of cultural
events and preliminary contests leading up to
the Miss World finals such as Miss World Beauty
with a Purpose, Miss World Beach beauty, Miss
World Talent, Miss World fitness/Sport, Miss
World Fashion/Top Model.
St.Lucia’s first representation at the
Miss World pageant dates back to 1974 with Sophia
St. Omer, the daughter of celebrated artiste
and painter, Sir Dunstan St. Omer. At that time
the pageant was held in London, England and
Miss St. Omer was among the finalists. Twenty
years later in 1994, St.Lucia was represented
by Yasmine Walcott when the pageant was held
in South Africa. Ten years later, in 2004 we
graced the Miss World stage in The People’s
Republic of China with Sascha Andrew Rose, followed
by Joy Matty in 2005 also in The People’s
Republic of China, then with Tamalisa Jn Baptiste
in Poland in 2006 and Joyann Biscette in South
Africa in 2008.
With such considerable coverage of the Miss
World Pageant, the extensive exposure received
by the island is undeniable. Firstly, our representative
is a cultural ambassador among her counterparts
with whom she experiences a month long adventure,
many of whom would have never even heard of
St.Lucia before. She is also interviewed by
the media and appears on radio, televison and
local and international newspapers. Most of
the interviews are centered around the country
of origin of the delegate. In addition the numerous
social and cultural events allow her to rub
shoulders with a wide cross section of the population
including the diplomatic core, show biz and
other celebrities, government officials and
private sector representatives among others.
Finally, the finals of the Miss World pageant
attract 2 billion telespectators during which
the country, through its delegate is clearly
exposed.
This year four young ladies will vie for the
title of Miss St.Lucia World thanks to Jalousie
Plantation, Access, Gaiety Productions, Southern
Shipping Ltd and Ward and Company. Unfortunately
two of the contestants coming from the UK had
to cancel at the last minute due to difficulty
in securing sponsorship for their trip to St.Lucia
in time for the national contest which will
take place this Sunday at The Indies Night Club
at 6:30pm. The pageant will be followed by an
After Party Ole School style from 9:30pm.
