Toni To Un-Break Hearts For Jazz
Stan Bishop

When it comes to stunning looks and rich vocal abilities, songstress Toni Braxton is certainly one of the world’s best shoe-ins. Another thing she may soon be known for is giving her many fans an expected dynamic performance at this year’s St. Lucia Jazz!
Yes – believe it or not – the six-time Grammy Award-winning sultry diva is the latest confirmation for the nineteenth annual St. Lucia Jazz to be held in May.
The chart-topping multi-platinum artiste was confirmed in a press release issued by the St. Lucia Tourist Board earlier this week.
Braxton, whose hits, such as “You’re Makin’ Me High,” ‘Un-Break My Heart” and “Breathe Again,” dominated the 90’s music scene, will join an eclectic cast of other world-class performers for St. Lucia Jazz 2010. The list so far include Jean Luc Ponty, Quito and the Edge, Steel Pulse, Shaggy, Maxi Priest, Carimi, Foreigner, St. Lucia’s own Ronald “Boo” Hinkson and Earl Klugh. Other notable artistes for the May 1st to 9th music festival include locally-based performing acts such as Teddyson John, Monty Maxwell, Alison Marquis, Harvey Millar, Claudia Edward, and Carl Gustave.

Organizers are hoping that with such top acts, the annual event will continue to grow to secure its place as one of the world’s leading legendary jazz festivals.
Braxton was born in Severn, Maryland, USA, on October 7, 1967 and is an operatically-trained vocalist. As a girl, she and her sisters sang in the church choir but would often watch Soul Train on television whenever their parents went shopping.
She later dropped out of college after songwriter Bill Pettaway noticed her singing to herself at a gas station. Through Pettaway, she and her four sisters were later signed to Arista Records in 1990 and coined The Braxtons.
In 1991, she was signed to LaFace and a year later her song, “Love Should Have Brought You Home Last Night,” was featured in the movie “Boomerang,” starring Eddie Murphy.
Her self-titled debut album appeared in 1993, followed throughout the years by “Secrets,” “The Heat,” ‘More Than A Woman” and “Libra.”
A new album from the former “Dancing With The Stars” act is scheduled for a March, 2010 launch, of f which the single “Yesterday,” has been making rounds close to the top of the charts.
