Augier is Caribbean 2010 Laureate for Arts & Letters

Both the Trinidad Guardian and Trinidad Express have announced the selection of Saint Lucia’s Adrian Augier as one of the three 2010 Caribbean Laureates named by the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence (ANSCAFE).
The news was delivered during the Laureates Announcement Ceremony by the chairman of the Regional Eminent Persons Selection Panel (EPP), Michael Mansoor. The ANSA Caribbean Awards for Excellence is the Caribbean’s preeminent recognition scheme. Launched by the ANSA McAL Foundation in 2005, it recognizes significant Caribbean achievement to encourage and support the pursuit of excellence for the benefit of the region. Reviewed biennially, this year’s laureates are Saint Lucian Adrian Augier
(Art and Letters), Guyanese Sydney Allicock (Public and Civic Contributions) and Dr Kathleen Coard of Grenada (Science and Technology.)
The three were selected from submissions coming through in-country selection committees out of five participating territories namely Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados, and the Eastern Caribbean.
The assessment of nominees consider four key criteria (1) demonstrated track record of consistently superior work; (2) capacity for significant future achievement; (3) work must have had, or likely to have, a positive impact on the Caribbean region; (4) and contenders must clearly be worthy exemplars to the people of the region. The eventual selectee emerged on the basis of their excellent work and potential for greater achievement.
Sitting on the regional evaluation panel are Sir Ellis Clarke, Justice Christopher Blackman, Dr Compton Bourne, Christopher Bovell, Judy Y Chang, Rev Henry Charles, Sister Paul D’Ornella, Sir Shridath Ramphal, Major General (Ret’d) Joseph Singh, Sir K Dwight Venner, with Michael Mansoor as Chairman.
According the Trinidad Guardian, the laureates will be”honoured at a gala award ceremony on April 17. They will receive the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence Medal and Citation, TT$500,000 to support their work and professional development and the opportunity for visibility, encouragement and support across the Caribbean and beyond.”
Adrian Augier, 50, is a co-founder of Saint Lucia’s Lighthouse Theatre (1983) and founder of the Factory Creative Arts Centre (1997). He has written and produced several musicals, including the creation myth Hewannorra Story and Troumassa and is also the writer/producer of Anthem (2004) and Esperance (2009), commissioned by the Saint Lucia government to mark the 25th and 30th anniversaries of the country’s independence.

 
 

He has been involved in carnival production for over 30 years, and launched his own band, Rituals, in 2003. On stage he has performed and presented works as far afield as Australia, Ireland, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Canada, the US, and the UK. Augier is also a poet with several titles to his name. His last volume,
Bridgemaker his latest published collection of poetic works, was met with critical acclaim by such critics as Kwame Dawes, Edward Kamau Brathwaite, and Rex Nettleford.
Augier has continue to contribute to the shaping of CARICOM policy on the development of creative industries for balanced economic growth. A former Chief Economist in Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Finance and Planning, he is a regionally recognised economic development consultant with extensive private and public sector experience. He has worked as an economist with the government of Saint Lucia, the World Bank, the European Union, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), USAID, and the OECS.
He is co-chair of the CARICOM Task Force on the Development of Cultural Industries, is a member of the Interim Festival Directorate for Carifesta, and has been consulted by the government of Grenada on the development of cultural industry.
His work has also been widely recognised, having attained awards which include: (i) The Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce Award for Professional Service to Regional Private Sector Development in 1992; (ii) The Minvielle and Chastanet Fine Arts Awards Council – Literary Arts in 1980, 1981, 1991, 1994 – Visual Arts in 1992 – Audio/Visual Production in 1998; and (iii) The Caribbean Cacique Award for outstanding contribution to the development, integration and exploration of theatre in the region.
Augier was educated at the University Of Western Ontario, Canada, where he gained his BA in Economics & Political Science, and at the American University, Washington DC, USA, where he earned an MA in Development Finance and Planning (Distinction).
