27th Feburary 2010
Girl in the Garden
By Anderson Desir

The morning mist of Cul-de-Sac
Haloed her long loose flow of hair
As she stood bent
Over her hoe
Weeding steadily
At her father’s vegetable patch.

The sun melting at her sides
Drip to slip
Its warmth
To the green
Bracelets of grass
Ankeling her bare feet,

Damp mud,
Softened by last night’s dew,
Gloved her fingers
Shoed her toes
Levied patterns on her clothes,
And she looked
Like she was,
A girl in the garden

Flavouring the early morning wind
With her sweat,
Summoning the weeds to bow
At her plough
Willing Nature
To bless with growth
Her father’s plants.

The wind heckled steadily,
Tempting in dance
Her long loose hair
Across her eyes,
And for a moment
She would kill her toil
To dust the tickle of curls away
Then bend again, weeding.
