MONOPOLY board game tournament here in Saint Lucia
By: Marie-Louise Benjamin

Monopoly is the best-selling commercial board game in the world. Players compete to acquire wealth through stylized economic activity involving the buying, rental and trading of properties using play money, as players take turns moving around the board according to the roll of the dice.
The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single provider. It is published by Parker Brothers, an imprint of Hasbro. According to Hasbro, since Charles Darrow patented the game in 1935, approximately 750 million people have played the game; making it “the most played commercial board game in the world. The 1999 Guinness Book of Records cited Hasbro’s previous statistic of 500 million people having played Monopoly. Games Magazine has inducted Monopoly into its Hall of Fame.
Monopoly is a giant in the gaming industry in the US especially with the new online version, Street Monopoly. Hasbro (a worldwide leader in children and family leisure time products and services) says that since 1935, more than 250 million copies of Monopoly has been sold in 103 countries and 37 languages. More than 200 different editions of the game have been published, but the most popular continues to be the classic “Number Nine” known by its original product number. “Number Nine” is based on the streets of Atlantic City and is nearly identical to Charles Darrow’s (listed monopoly inventor) original submission to Parker Brothers. Monopoly is amongst the top ten lists of most played board games in Hollywood and recently LA Times confirmed that director Ridlley Scott is contemplating a movie based on the board game.
Excel Marketing Services, a new company, focused on family recreational development introduces for the first time in St. Lucia a MONOPOLY Tournament scheduled for the afternoon of December 14th 2009, 11:30am to 6:00pm at Prio’s Country Palace, Castries.
Amongst Hollywood’s top board games list, the escalating MONOPOLY gaming in the US, Europe, other international countries, and our island’s craving of putting an end to the idling minds of our teenagers cultivated this idea. Readers, at this point blowing dust off your old monopoly game should remind you of the excitement that it once brought. This is what we are trying to do at Excel Marketing Services.

We want to build investor-minds and good gaming spirit within our children and having family support is a major start. Remember, the old saying what you reap, what you sow...Well, we have to build the minds of our children in preparation for the betterment of our country. We at Excel Marketing Services strongly believe that engaging in a MONOPOLY tournament is one way.
Most MONOPOLY players use the game as a means of whiling away one’s leisure time. However, unlike computer games, board games like MONOPOLY are interactive and have the advantage of helping players develop social and interpersonal skills. Playing MONOPOLY in a group provides the opportunity for players to interact as well as observe how others think and analyze. Playing MONOPOLY encourages family members to spend more time with each other and thus build stronger family bonds and friendship. Playing MONOPOLY contributes to child educational development. The game helps a child to improve his/her mathematical skills as well as teaching him/her the value of money.
Our first tournament is teamed up with SCRABBLE, another very well-known educational game. We follow the standard rules of both games, except that the MONOPOLY is ninety minutes long. The game comprises two primary SCRABBLE rounds with qualifiers via elimination to the semi-final rounds, then final round, a premier MONOPOLY round, then finals.
We are asking for the support of teachers, civil servants, officers.... ALL interested persons, register at the Central Library in Castries, every Saturday starting October 24th till December 5th 2009, from 9:30pm to 12:30pm. A player becomes a role model to our teenagers. The idea is to help set a path for our teenagers, as well as maintaining social interaction amongst Saint Lucian people.
GAME EXPECTATIONS
Excel Marketing services expect a healthy game of monopoly with players taking chances. The host of the show will prepare a short briefing on how to play each game along with rules as aid. We want to experience early bankruptcy, big spenders, and positive decision-making exercise. In the future of this game we hope to foster a group selected as our national team who will be participating in regional or international tournaments.
We have attached cash prizes starting from $500.00 as an award to our winner/s, and many other prizes to be won by participants and attendees. Every good deed deserves an incentive.
In the future Excel Marketing Services aims for commencing MONOPOLY in Schools, and organize competitions. Readers in favor of this game and/or who wish to make a written contribution should send an email to excelmarketingservices@gmail.com or write to MONOPOLY, Box 8138, Choc Castries.
