Sweet sweet
pan
By Alex G.
“Ah-h-h,
boy, what could I say about de sounds of sweet
pan? Nice, crafted, well tuned steel pan dat
is. It does give a special flavour to de carnival,
a real, real, special kina flavour. Garcon…dat
does make yuh mout’ water like rain. No
food sweet like dat, an ah even goin as far
as to say dat so far, I eh feel nuttin yet dat
comparing to de sweetness ah pan”.
Ah tell yuh, man, look here. Night time when
ah hear dem practising in de pan yard, I does
go an sit dong by de gate; an’ for de
res’ ah de night, is a straight, straight
contack high I does get from dat music. Man,
pan sweet like joke.
“Now, on de road is something else again.
Doe mine dem fellas wit de new bands with all
de latest Hi-Fi and so on an so forth and even
fifth. Ah tell yuh, dey could jump high an dey
could jump low but when de sound of pan reach
dey ears, is like dey mesmerize. Dey jus leggo
demselves to de pulsatin’ ponging ah de
pan music”.
“You see, dis is how it is. First, yuh
body start to sway…an’ sway to de
music. Den yuh arms reach up in de air, with
no permission from you at all you know. Dey
jus rise. Then, your eyes follow… dey
close. Gar-r-r-r-con, is de music alone dat
in control…sweet…sweet pan music…for
carnival, any carnival. Anything sweeter dan
dat? Not to my ears!!
