LUCELEC
PRESENTS 26 SCHOLARSHIPS
Saint
Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC)
presented 26 scholarships to eligible children
of LUCELEC employees over the weekend. Five
of the recipients are new entrants into the
Company’s scholarship programme having
performed very well at this year’s Common
Entrance Exams. The other 21 are continuing
in the programme.
The programme awards deserving students a full
scholarship covering books, school supplies,
uniforms, tuition and other fees, school bags
and notebooks through secondary school and the
Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, providing
the recipients maintain good academic performances.
This
year, six other students who also performed
well at the Common Entrance exams were granted
bursaries for the upcoming academic year. The
presentations were made at the Company’s
annual Scholarship Social held at its Cul de
Sac Compound. The activity is staged to celebrate
the achievements of the outstanding performers
of the scholarship programme, as well as to
give the students the opportunity to interact
with each other and with LUCELEC personnel in
a less formal setting.

In
a motivational talk to the students, which formed
part of the programme, Managing Director of
the Celestial Self-Development Centre, Thecla
Deterville, lauded LUCELEC for what she called
“an investment in the human resource capacity
of the country”. She observed that these
scholarship holders would be the doctors, lawyers,
entrepreneurs, and leaders of the country in
the years to come. She also encouraged the students
to apply themselves diligently to their studies,
not only to ensure that they remain in the scholarship
programme, but also to build upon the great
work they have accomplished thus far.
LUCELEC’s Managing Director, Trevor Louisy,
congratulated all the recipients and revealed
plans for providing even greater support for
the students through additional motivational
and study skills sessions to be held during
the course of the academic year.
The Company also used the opportunity to provide
the recipient of its Bernard Theobalds Scholarship,
Miss Abigail Williams, with funding for her
second year of studies at the University of
the West Indies. The Bernard Theobalds Scholarship
is intended to encourage students to pursue
an education at the University of the West Indies
for a career in the field of Engineering. The
scholarship is open to all Saint Lucians and
is awarded once every 3 years.
Since the inception of the LUCELEC scholarship
programme more than one hundred students have
benefitted.
