Did
you know, children, that I am not the only one looking out
for you? Hello kids, this is Amazona Versicolor again to tell
you about some very good news about a:
Seed
Bank

“Just
this week I heard some very exciting news. Come to think of
it, I heard it through the grapevine. I always worry about
what is happening to our environment and also the terrible
things that could happen if we do not take care of it.
The story I heard put my mind a little at ease and made me
feel very happy. A little humming bird told me that a dragon
fly told her that she overheard the whiptail lizard and iguana
talking about some really good people who care a lot about
the environment and who started a seed bank. A seed bank!
I said, because I couldn’t imagine what that was all
about. Well, I was bold enough to go to them for an explanation
and this is what it is all about.”
It really is a bank where some of all the seeds in the whole
world are kept safely in case something terrible happens to
destroy all the plants on the earth. It is something like
the story of Noah’s Ark where two of every animal in
the world went in to be saved from the terrible flood.
The seed bank can hold twice the number of seed varieties
which exist in the world today in case of a terrible tragedy.
For
this reason it is also called the ‘doomsday vault’
and because it is near the North Pole you can just imagine
how cold it is.
The seed bank is high up in the mountains. In case the ice
and snow in the area melts and there is a great deal of flooding
it will not seep into the bank. It is also built with lots
of concrete, a very strong door and an alarm just In case
someone tries to get in without permission.
Whiptail said that it is also strong enough to be safe from
nuclear missile attacks (ask mom or dad to explain).
People from many countries of the world have sent in seeds
from their countries to be saved in the seed bank.
The bank was officially opened for the first time on Tuesday
and two very important people who care very much for our planet
earth made the first symbolic deposits of grains of rice.
I must show you pictures of these two people. They are Wangari
Maathai who is a
Kenyan en-viron-men-tal-ist and a Nobel Peace Prize Winner
and the Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg whose countrymen
paid for the entire seed bank.
So you see kids, we are not alone. There are other people
who care very much about our planet but many more are needed.
Untill we meet again, have a happy weekend. Your friend in
nature always Amazona Versicolor.
