Castries Lions and the Aux Lyons Combined School

The Aux Lyons Combined School now has an up-to-date Student Support Centre, thanks to some benefactors, including the Lions Club of Castries. The club donated some much needed items e.g. books, educational equipment and a filing cabinet.
The driving force behind the renovated room is Special Needs teacher Digna George. She wanted to create a meaningful and comfortable learning environment for the Special Needs students of her school, therefore some much needed storage space and a raised area to serve as a cosy Reading corner, were among the sections that were created.
Both Ms George and Mrs. St Forte, the school’s principal expressed their appreciation for the donations given by the Lions. The Lions Club of Castries is very proud to have been associated with such a worthwhile venture.

Aux Lyons Combined School show cases Food Fair

A major activity which helped to bring a satisfactory end to the school year was a Food Fair at the Aux Lyons Combined School. The principal Mrs. St Forte, students, teachers and parents, all played a part in making the project a reality.
The students with the help of their teachers carried out an extensive research to learn about the use and benefits of local fruits, vegetables, plants and herbs. The skills of cooking, preserving, and drying various produce like bananas, pawpaw and mangoes were employed, so that innovative and mouth-watering recipes were created. The medicinal benefits of herbs and plants were explored and documented. All these were attractively displayed in an exhibition, where visitors were invited to sample the items.
It was a very worthwhile project. Not only did everyone enjoy the palatable results, but they were able to learn of the health remedies for a variety of ailments using the herbs and plants that were studied. A significant outcome of this exercise was the demonstration of the use of local products.
