OECS
Heads of Government will open their 45th Authority Meeting
in St Georges, the Grenada capital. The two day business session
will be preceded by an opening ceremony on the evening of
Wednesday, 23rd May, 2007. Addresses will be delivered by
the host Country’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell,
outgoing chairman Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of Antigua
and Barbuda, incoming chairman Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit
of the Commonwealth of Dominica and OECS Director General,
Dr. Len Ishmael.

All the wrangling
now going on about a successor for Prime Minister Sir John
Compton could either cease or take on a new direction now
that the Prime Minister is back on the island. Sir John came
back to St. Lucia Saturday night from New York and was whisked
away to his home immediately.

workers threaten strike
The Saint Lucia
Seamen, Waterfront and General Workers Trade Union has taken
a long-running wage negotiations with the Saint Lucia Electricity
Services Limited (LUCELEC) to the next level by threatening
a worker strike. Union president Alexis Alcide, said up to
yesterday Friday May 18, the company had expressed no reaction
to the notice of strike served on the company on May 16. The
two parties held their latest talks on Thursday May 15, and
Alcide said there was no progress.

Lucia Distillers open for business
St. Lucia Distillers
has remained open for business despite a major fire at its
administrative offices in Roseau which affected operations.
During the early hours of Wednesday morning 2nd May 2007,
this fire destroyed the administrative office building which
housed the administrative and sales offices, the blending
area, a laboratory, raw material storage area and an export
finished product bond. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
