How SLP will decrease youth unemployment

THE EDITOR
Youth unemployment is a major problem among the OECS countries and the wider Caribbean. Of all the islands in the Caribbean, St. Lucia is reported to have one of the highest youth unemployment rates. Only Jamaica is in St. Lucia’s league. Since the OECS has claimed that St. Lucia is the most unequal of all its member States, it stands to reason that the OECS believes that measures should be taken to decrease inequality in St. Lucia. Inequality undoubtedly contributes to the rise of unemployment and other social exclusions. St. Lucian youth have stated that they do feel excluded in society.

To set the record straight

I do not often listen to talk shows because although instituted with the best of intentions by well meaning journalists they often degenerate into a forum which epitomizes lack of tolerance for differences and a lack of respect for differences of opinion. I however, happened to tune into “What Makes Me Mad” on Tuesday May 15, 2007, where the topic of discussion degenerated into people airing their frustrations about what makes them mad about the Catholic Church. Being the teacher that I will always be I saw the opportunity for what we in educational circles refer to as a “teachable moment”. I am referring to a statement made by one of the callers in which he or she authoritatively said that Catholics read only the four Gospels. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Allow me to enlighten you.

The forceful immersion of white people in black culture

Strange things are happening, black culture is about black people, it is not about what St. Lucian society thinks it is or what white people think it ought to be, or what they want to make it; black culture is what it is, and that’s black culture, the way of life of black people.
After four (4) hundred years of extreme destruction and suppression of black culture it has still emerged strong and potent, the reason that white people are so interested in ours, in this new millennium is to distort, misdirect, mislead, and to crush all what we have achieved in the rejuvenation of our culture.
