Saint Lucia Jazz
’07 got off to a dull start last Friday as the Chamber
of Commerce (COC) hosted the opening of the event for the
first time. The island’s main domestic tourism marketing
event is expected to swing into the weekend on a high note,
with the thrilling fusion of fringe events leading up to the
main stage.

The
prelude to Saint Lucia Jazz main stage will feature a line-up
as exciting as any presented at the world-renowned event.
The tranquil atmosphere of the Pigeon Island National Park
by night will be the perfect place to get lost in the easy
rhythms flowing from artistes of international ilk.
Brazilian vocalist Tania Maria, saxophonist David Murray and
the Gwo Ka Masters and the W.E.S Group lead off tonight. Known
for her exhilarating vocals and keyboard artistry,

Shaking
it up on the Fringe
Each year, jazz
on the fringe becomes more entrenched in Saint Lucia Jazz.
This year the peripheral events again had a showing that established
their right to be part of the music festival.
This year headliners Tabou Combo and Fuego Latino brought
the crowd to its feet as expected. The heady Latin and Creole
rhythms with the distinctly familiar undertones of Caribbean
music touched a chord in the responsive audience,

success recorded in the staging of last year’s Jazz
on the Pier, organizers of the event – the National
Development Corporation (NDC) certainly has before it a tall
order, if it is to repeat the feat or surpass expectations
in staging the 2007 event.  |
