Over the years Jamaica has produced and is continuing
to produce world class athletes such as Arthur Wint, Donald
Quarry, Merlene Ottey, Sanya Richards, Deon Hemmings, Bridgette
Foster Hilton, 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell,
and of course Yohan Blake.
Two
more greats celebrated
The
late Sir Clyde Walcott and Reverend Wes Hall were inducted
into the Sticky Wicket West Indies Cricket Hall of Fame on
Sunday May 6th 2007 at a glittering ceremony at the Stanford
Cricket Ground.
It was a huge party with performances by top regional artistes
Red Hot Flames, David Rudder, Destra and Grammy-award winner
Sean Paul which went into the early morning hours, and culminating
with a dazzling fifteen-minute fireworks display.

With
all the negativity surrounding many efforts of today’s
society, the Laborie Youth and Sports Council in collaboration
with the Laborie Credit Union, organised the ‘Stop the
Violence’ Basketball Tournament.
However last Sunday April 29th, 2007, to the embarrassment
of the organisers and sponsors, three of the clubs scheduled
to participate in the third place play-off and the first game
in the Best of Three Finals never appeared.
Sammy
seeks permanent spot
Now
that Darren Sammy is part of the West Indies test squad for
the 2007 summer tour of England, he was elated when the news
came through.
Speaking to The VOICE from England in an exclusive
interview, he said “It’s always an honour for
me to be part of any West Indies squad, and I must say I am
very honoured and excited.”

Sponsors for Next Three Opens
For
the first time the Saint Lucia Squash Association has been
able to attract a title sponsor who has made a commitment
to sponsor the annual open tournament for the next three years.
The tournament which is in its fourteenth year, is
part of a three-week Caribbean squash circuit beginning with
the Milex Jamaica Open one week before the Saint Lucia Open,
ending with the Barbados Squash Open taking place one week
following the Saint Lucia tournament.

The WICB at a
Special Meeting in Barbados, on Sunday April 29, reviewed
recommendations for a New Vision for West Indies cricket submitted
by a group comprising Directors, members of the Cricket Committee,
selectors and management.
The Board agreed to adopt the best practices proposed
by the group and send a clear signal that the way forward
will be characterised by a renewed emphasis on confidentiality,
accountability and performance.
Familiarity
breeds success
Picking a side
for the first time since the retirement of Brian Lara, and
the failed bid to win the first World Cup staged in the Caribbean,
the West Indies selection committee has resisted the urge
to click the refresh button.
Gordon Greenidge, convenor of the West Indies selectors, admitted
that choosing the 15-member squad for the four Tests in England
was challenging, but they have decided to stick with the familiar
faces.
Sports
receives new life
The
Micoud Youth and Sports Council has been since the recent
election of an Interim Committee, attempting to revamp sports
in the eastern village.
According to Ricky JnBaptiste, president of the Interim Committee,
“Basically what we have been trying to do is revamp
sports in Micoud after being dormant for so long.”
