Developmental
Challenge - Part 16
“…
Economic growth without development is a zero-end game….”
Excerpt from Prime Minister Sir John Compton’s 2007
Budget address.
Facing our world today, we find billions of people of all
ages in dire need of material goods and services. Billions
of people live in gross poverty worldwide. According to The
International Labor Organization’s publication, World
of Work, No. 58, December 2006:
The
quiet revolution of the ‘African Movies’
LIGHTS,
CAMERA, NOLLYWOOD
Since ‘Mr. Ibu” debut days of the African/Nigerian
movie genre here some two years ago, a new world of entertainment
has been burgeoning, and has seemingly captured the imagination
of the Saint Lucian public, creating along the way an enviable
penchant for Nollywood flicks and an admirable following of
loyal fans. Yes, this article is based on Nollywood in the

Foundation’s SOUFRIERE JAZZ 2007, promises to offer
visitors a new experience in Saint Lucia Jazz. The earliest
writers on the native people of Amerindians, who believed
in the spirit world called the Sulphur Springs “Qualibou”,
meaning “The place where one ascends”. This was
interpreted by Father Charles Jesse to mean “The place
of death”. This version is negative, but it reflects
religious prejudices against native traditions and religions
by the early missionaries.

Labour
Day Message
A very
Happy Labour Day Celebration to fellow Saint Lucians and our
friends from other countries residing with us.
Labour Day celebrations have been with us in the Caribbean
since 1938, and over the years, irrespective of the peaceful
recreational activities that workers choose to engage, in
celebration of that day, they have earned it and deserve to
enjoy that day to the full. This is really the time to appreciate
the hard work that the labour force in Saint Lucia has put
in throughout the year as well as their continuous contribution
to the progress of our nation.

Statement
By the President of the SLCFA
As President
of the Saint Lucia-China Friendship Association, I am concerned
about the implications of the decision by the Government of
Saint Lucia to re-establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan
for the friendly people-to-people relations that have been
developing between the people of Saint Lucia and the people
of the People’s Republic of China.
China
in Wait and See Mode
A high-level
meeting between a Chinese delegation and the Government of
St. Lucia Thursday has intensified instead of settling the
already strained relations between the two parties since Government’s
announcement Tuesday that it would re-establish diplomatic
relations with Taiwan within the soonest possible time.
