TO VISIT CHINA
A
delegation from Taiwan, led by that country’s Foreign
Minister was supposed to have arrived on the island late yesterday
afternoon, a situation that could deepen the ongoing controversy
having to do with St. Lucia, China and Taiwan over diplomatic
relations with the former.
Meanwhile Rufus Bousquet, External Affairs Minister is expected
to visit China at a date to be agreed on further deepening
discussions as to where St. Lucia stands regarding diplomatic
relations with either country.

capitalizing on CWC
Director
of Tourism Maria Fowell says the Tourist Board (SLTB) is capitalising
on the opportunities presented by the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Fowell says the Board, which has a mandate to support the
tourism industry by marketing the island, has focused primarily
on the media. “There are obviously some persons who
would be more important than others,” says Fowell of
the international media, which transmits reports to millions
of people around the world. The SLTB presented media personnel
with a welcome package that included mementos and information
on the island and its special events.

Corporate Donations for NCF
Several corporate
donors took the opportunity at the launching of the National
Community Foundation’s (NCF) 5th annual telethon to
state their support of the organisation. Executive Director
of the NCF Jacintha Annius Lee welcomed these renewed expressions
of support as the non-profit philanthropic organisation launched
its largest fund raising drive. Renwick & Co Ltd, EC Global
Insurance, Consolidated Foods, the Bank of Saint Lucia, Digicel
and the National Insurance Corporation, have all added to
the coffers of the island’s main charitable organisation,
which has disbursed $1.8 million dollars in the past four
and a half years.

Rape
A 50 year old female citizen of United States of America,
visiting her boyfriend in Anse Civon, quarter of Choiseul,
was at her boyfriend’s residence in Choiseul on Friday
the 16th of March 2007, about 10:30am, when an unknown man
came into the house with a cutlass and raped her.
Vehicular
Manslaughter case Adjourned
The first high
court hearing of a case of vehicular manslaughter was adjourned
on Monday March 19, four years after the act in question.
The case, which has gone through its stages at the lower court,
was adjourned due to the non-appearance of Marcus Foster,
the lawyer for the accused Jacinta Bevan.
Former
Prison Inmate Takes Prison System to Court
Seven
former inmates of the prison system want to know what happened
to a seven-page document they presented to two members of
the Board of Visiting Justices detailing corruption at the
former Bridge Street Prisons.
And one of them, who robbed a priest and spent eight years
in jail for the crime, says he is taking the prison system
to court for not protecting him during his incarcerated period. |
