LUCELEC Helps Shape Regional Safety Standards

Saint Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) was one of several regional utilities represented at the 2007 Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) Occupational Health & Safety Conference in Aruba recently. LUCELEC was represented by Mr. John Charlery, Health, Safety, Environment and Security Supervisor, and Mr. Nigel Fulgence a member of LUCELEC’s Health and Safety Committee.

The Legacy of Lloyd

On Monday March 19th, 2007 at 2:30 PM, the Caribbean lost one of its finest intellectuals, original thinkers and perceptive minds in the person of Trindadian Lloyd Algernon Best. The news reached me one and a half hours after his death courtesy CBC radio Barbados. At the time of writing, it had not made the news in St. Lucia.
Lloyd Best will be remembered for his pioneering and lifelong effort in creating new analytical categories to understand and explain Caribbean society, economy, and politics. “Independent thought”, was Lloyd Best’s holy grail throughout his rich life. It was in the pursuit of that objective that Lloyd Bests’s intellectual legacy to the Caribbean can most easily be identified and where it will most likely have its impact in the decades to come.

Ladera Mourns the Passing of John DiPol, Original Architect

March 19, 2007, Soufrière, St. Lucia, West Indies – Ladera’s original architect and designer, John DiPol, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday morning as a result of a massive heart attack. At the time of his death, Mr. DiPol was playing tennis in Soufriere, one of his favorite pastimes. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara.
Ladera is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of their original designer and dear friend. Mr. DiPol is credited with conceiving the open-air concept that distinguished Ladera when it opened in 1992,
