The
Legacy of Lloyd
On
Monday March 19th, 2007 at 2:30 PM, the Caribbean lost one
of its finest intellectuals, original thinkers and perceptive
minds in the person of Trindadian Lloyd Algernon Best. The
news reached me one and a half hours after his death courtesy
CBC radio Barbados. At the time of writing, it had not made
the news in St. Lucia.
Lloyd Best will be remembered for his pioneering and lifelong
effort in creating new analytical categories to understand
and explain Caribbean society, economy, and politics. “Independent
thought”, was Lloyd Best’s holy grail throughout
his rich life. It was in the pursuit of that objective that
Lloyd Bests’s intellectual legacy to the Caribbean can
most easily be identified and where it will most likely have
its impact in the decades to come.
Ladera
Mourns the Passing of John DiPol, Original Architect
March
19, 2007, Soufrière, St. Lucia, West Indies –
Ladera’s original architect and designer, John DiPol,
passed away unexpectedly on Sunday morning as a result of
a massive heart attack. At the time of his death, Mr. DiPol
was playing tennis in Soufriere, one of his favorite pastimes.
He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara.
Ladera is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of their original
designer and dear friend. Mr. DiPol is credited with conceiving
the open-air concept that distinguished Ladera when it opened
in 1992,
