High Levels of Capital Expenditure Required to Modernize Water Industry

Over the last few months much has been said and written about the Part Privatization (PP) of WASCO. There have been cries from some that the government is selling the country’s silver to a foreign company. Others are convinced that water is too important to the health of the nation to be sold to a private company. Water is life and therefore cannot be sold to make a profit.

Tabo Mbekie scribbles the writing on the wall for Robert Mugabe

It was a long and tedious road, but as the old saying goes the longest rope has an end. Robert Mugabe supported by his dear compatriot Tabo Mbekie clung to power for as long as he possibly could despite the element of age, an over prolonged period of service, disenchantment, arrogance and outright rejection all of which he completely discarded.

Whaling: the Truth is Our Responsibility

Saint Lucia’s position on whaling and whale watching has unfortunately been misunderstood for a long time. As a small island developing state, Saint Lucia’s economy is largely dependent on tourism and activities such as, whale watching (‘great whales’, dolphins and porpoises) is promoted among visitors as a viable form of nature tourism.

Dat Was Mas!

It was high class high mas this year as carnival bands stepped up the game, adding more bells and whistles to the usual package sold to revellers. This year all agreed that we jumped with class. Of course some feel that along with the style of many costumes on the road, this was just another example of band leaders copying foreign ideas yet again.

In Saint Lucia Every day is Mas

Some years ago the late Sir John Compton had issued a warning which, for a time, had become something of a slogan: “Lucians, watch your bread!” Sir John, at the time, had been warning against the St.Lucian Mentality of ostentatious living and their insatiable love of fetes, those Saint Lucia characteristics still continue. We see it more so to-day,

The power and repercussions of politics and politicians

Politicians worldwide undoubtedly call the shots as far as meaningful and significant decisions are concerned, but within the last fifteen years, the greater part of the electorates are certainly not inspired by the administration of politicians for a number of reasons. On the other hand, it is very difficult to offer an alternative at this time,

Obama and McCain: Intelligence and Charisma versus age and experience

The most recent polls indicate a very close race between the two presidential candidates, but for whatever reason, Obama appears to have the edge from a broad perspective. The key areas for Obama’s general admiration are – intelligence, trustworthiness, calm, good looking, presentable, astute, and his youthful appearance.

Education through Parliament

At a General Election the voters do not choose a Government, they choose a Parliament. The first task is for everyone to vote for a Member of Parliament and that Member in turn represents the voters. Yet, in St Lucia, parliamentarians and people traditionally regard the House of Parliament as a place of seclusion, a place where government secrets are discussed,

Letter to Minister...

Like many of my countrymen, I too felt a sense of relief when the games and jawboning within the Stephenson King administration were amicably settled. An overdue reconfiguration of portfolios and the re-inclusion of Mr.Bousquet into the Cabinet of Ministers followed. The icing on the cake for me, however, was the appointment of your self,

Digicel Congratulates Carnival 2KGR8 Winners

Digicel, proud sponsors of St Lucia’s Biggest Cultural Extravaganza, would like to extend hearty congratulations to all participants and organizers of this year’s St Lucia Carnival 2KGR8. Digicel is overwhelmed with pride to have been given the opportunity to support the St Lucia Tourist Board and the Cultural Development Foundation,

Westminster System is not working

There are some amongst us who keep repeating the nonsense that the Westminster System is okay. They claim the problem with the system delivering for us does not lie in the construct of the system itself but with the way that we use it. Let me begin by agreeing that there is no system that is perfect. That is okay, every system has its flaws,

The Prime Minister and Minister of Physical Planning must address the deteriorating situation at the Office of the Crown Lands Department

For years the office of the Crown Lands Department worked harmoniously with the public but when square pegs are placed into round holes unnecessary behaviour becomes the order of the day. It is always said that a bit of power in the wrong hands can be most disturbing and it appears that such a scenario is becoming entrenched at the office,

Raise in fares superfluous for Castries Gros Islet route

Bus drivers keep crying to government for a raise in fares but no matter what the raise some routes will benefit astronomically while others will always suffer. Some of these drivers are suggesting that a twenty five cent increase will be too little but I wonder if those in charge take time to be cognizant of the routes and the extent of movement of buses across the board.
