HIKES!
It
has been a week of intense discussions between Government
Ministers, petroleum dealers and importers over a suitable
price hike for petrol and cooking gas as the country braces
itself for an increase in these commodities that could be
announced as early as tonight or tomorrow night.

begins to rise
Two
price lists decorate the walls of the Ideal Bakeries downtown
Castries-one for cakes and the other for tennis rolls.
At a particular location, one attendant becomes extremely
agitated when asked to sell this consumer a loaf of bread.
“We are not selling local loaves anymore and have not
sold them since Sunday (Jan.6, 2008); we will only be selling
rolls.”

Saturday the 5th of January 2008, a post mortem examination
was performed on the body of Albert Walter alias Bora, age
48 of Bois-Patat, Castries and the result revealed death by
respiratory failure secondary to stab wounds. The
motionless body of Albert Walter was found in a shed in an
area near Trinity Church Road, Castries.

Minister Keith Mondesir last Sunday may have silenced many
critics of his optometry practice here when he was named as
the Caribbean Optometrist of the year 2008. But can
he silence those who continue to say he is not an ophthalmologist
who really is a physician who specializes in ophthalmology.

New
JOCV Volunteer
On
January 8th one new JICA/JOCV Volunteer joined the JICA/JOCV
Saint Lucia Office. This gentleman is a Physical Education
Teacher. E is attached to the Ministry of Education
and Culture and will be stationed at the District II Education
Office in Sans Souci. This is the 16th group of JICA/JOCV
Volunteers to be dispatched to this country via the commitment
of service promised since 1995,
