Challenging
Year for Region
Of
late the economic situation of the countries of the English
speaking Caribbean has come under the microscope by regional
and international institutions, but more so by citizens of
the various countries hit by high costs of goods and services.
While citizens cry out for relief, regional and international
organizations are calling on countries to be more competitive,

Courtroom
etiquette
The
courtroom may be foreign territory for some individuals but
for most lawyers, it is almost like their second home. There
are certain formalities that must be observed in the courtroom,
let’s have a look at a few of them now. 1.
Make sure you have the right time/date/location of your court

Guyana
Massacre underscores need for Pan-CARICOM response
As
I write this commentary, the people of Guyana are gripped
in uncertainty and apprehension about the days to come as
a result of what the Guyanese media have described as ‘the
Lusignan massacre” – the brutal murder
of eleven innocent people, including five children by a band
of heavily armed killers on the morning of Saturday, January
26th.
THE
VIRTUES PROJECT
When
you are humble you don’t act as if you are more important
than other people. You are happy to serve others and think
other people’s needs are important. You don’t
expect others or yourself to be perfect. You don’t criticize
others or yourself. You admit mistakes and learn from them.
Sometimes mistakes are our best teachers.

The
Shoemaker, the Jamette and the Barber (Part I)
On
a hot night in July many years ago, a local politician in
a crowded bar threw an almighty tantrum at one of his junior
colleagues. “Don’t worry,” a reporter,
passing by, comforted the young hopeful, scalded by the steamy
lava of profanities, “that’s the Marchand in him.”
The ‘Marchand’ in him could have been
the La Pénsèe in someone else,
Developmental
Challenge
Human
aggression and national development. How does human aggression
hinder national development? Will St. Lucia ever come to experience
human political aggression to the extent of disruption of
its developmental processes? Martin Luther King Jr.,

Abraham Lincoln....
Roving
Caregivers Programme Family Corner Part One
Child
discipline should start in the beginning. You should enjoy
holding, cuddling, and talking with your baby. Studies have
reported that infants respond to the sounds of the human voice.
Talking to your child early may help in your child’s
brain development and train them to know what we expect by
our tone (i.e. “Mommy or Daddy loves you” or “It’s
time to go to sleep now”).
BONSAI
NEWS
The
Bonsai Society of St Lucia was founded in 1989 to promote
the art of Bonsai which is often referred to as a “living
sculpture”. A Bonsai is a miniature tree grown
in a shallow tray – “bon” meaning pot and
“sai” meaning tree. However, putting a plant in
a tray or pot does not make it a Bonsai. Although small in
size, a Bonsai must in its entirety express the beauty and
volume of a tree growing,

CLIMATE
CHANGE IS HAPPENING
Climate
change is a major environmental phenomenon, with serious ramifications
for Saint Lucia and other small island states. Indeed,
small island states contribute only a very small fraction
of total global greenhouse gas emissions, but bear a disproportionately
high level of risk to the impacts of climate change. A 0.6
º C increase in temperature occurred in the last century,

Two
Nobel Laureates, so what
It’s
interesting that we boast about our sovereignty, our Noble
Laureates, our self worth etc, but always seek outside endorsement
before we can embrace our local artistes and local institutions.
‘Local’ seems synonymous with low quality,
low ethics, low self esteem and low priority, so much so that
many pundits prefer to use the word ‘National’
instead of ‘Local’.
