Police
officers are given special powers, unique in our society,
to use force, even deadly force, in the commission of their
duties. Along with that power, however, the responsibility
of loyalty first to the public is absolutely necessary. That
requires that police misconduct ought not to be condoned.
But it appears that the greatest single barrier,

Ministry Watchmen To Get Paid
More
than three hundred security personnel attached to the Ministry
of Education and Culture are expected to receive outstanding
payments owed to them. Last weekend, a considerable
number of security officers withdrew their services in protest
of the tardy payments. Reportedly, one school suffered the
effects of vandalism,

Rapists freed!
It
comes as no surprise that our justice system is in crisis.
Miscarriages of justice are becoming the norm. Take
for instance what happened recently to two young men who had
been jointly charged with raping a young female way back in
2004. The virtual complainant then a school girl had told
police that the two had raped her on the 2nd September.

Lucian representation at 17th International AIDS Conference
St.
Lucia civil society working in HIV/AIDS is being represented
at the 17th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2008) currently
underway in Mexico City Mexico until August 8th 2008. The
St. Lucia delegation comprises Dr. Marcus Day of the Caribbean
Drug Abuse Institute, Ms. Veronica Cenac, and Ms. Joan Didier
of the AIDS Action Foundation.

Installs New Anti-Skimming Device
As
part of ongoing efforts to maximizing client security and
comfort while using ATMs, RBC has upgraded its ATM
machines throughout Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean with
an Anti-Skimming device designed to prevent would-be criminals
from placing fraudulent skimming equipment over the ATM card
slot. Card “skimming” occurs when the information,

Volunteer Passes Away
The
death has occurred unexpectedly in Cork, Ireland, of Mrs Lorna
Cole who spent two years as a volunteer teacher with Care
and the Presentation Brothers. She taught in Castries and
Vigie where she was extremely popular with her colleagues
and trainees. She is survived by her husband Andy who was
also in St.Lucia at the same time, her sons and daughters
one of whom Cathy also worked in St. Lucia.
