Midnight Madness This Evening

Weather permitting this evening the Vigie Multi Purpose Sports Complex will come alive as early as 7:00pm with netball entertainment at its highest level and that’s when the St. Lucia National Netball Association stages it most talked about showpiece dubbed “Midnight Madness Netball Festival”.
According to the 1st Vice President of the SLNNA Gene Leon a total of nine teams conristing of nine players only, inclusive of one male player are expected to engage each other in the festival.
The participating teams namely - Naughty School Girls, Sexy Night Bees, Micoud UFC, Dynasty, Divalicous Dreamers, Shamrock, Sharkrons, while the other two teams will disclose their found name on the evening.
Apart from the creativity of the mode of dress in keeping with the midnight madness theme; this event will feature modification of the rules of netball, in line with Fastnet which is a new format of netball introduced by the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) three years ago.
This style of netball is comparable to now popular Twenty20 cricket and according to IFNA; Fastnet is designed to make games faster and more television-friendly, with the ultimate aim of raising the sport’s profile and attracting more spectators and greater sponsorship. This evening’s showpiece at the VMPSC will be no exception.
The new rule allows for power plays. Each team can separately nominate one “power play” quarter, in which each goal scored by that team counts for double points. Each quarter lasts only six minutes, compared with 15 minutes in normal international netball competition. Breaks in between quarters are two minutes each. Injury time-outs are 30 seconds only; standard rules allow for one initial two-minute injury time-out.

The goal shooter (GS) and goal attack (GA) may shoot goals from outside the shooting circle. These goals count for two points; in a power-play quarter, they would count for four points. Umpires raise one arm for a single-point goal and two arms for a two-point goal. In standard netball rules, goals can only be shot from within the shooting circle and count for one point only.
The team that conceded the goal takes the next centre pass; teams alternate taking the first centre pass of each quarter. Under normal rules, a coin toss determines the first centre pass of the match, after which centre passes alternate between the two teams. Further, as in basketball, teams are allowed to use rolling substitutions, with no stoppages in play per substitution and with unlimited substitutions per quarter. Standard international rules only allow substitutions either between quarters or when a player is injured.
The SLNNA is appealing to netball enthusiasts to come and experience netball with a difference. The SLNNA looks forward to the support of all netballers; as well as their families and friends.
