1st National Bank St. Lucia Continues Unbroken Support of Nobel Laureate Week

Nobel Laureate week 2010 is being held under the theme “Celebrating Excellence at Home and Abroad”. A constant supporter of this highlight on the country’s calendar of annual events is the country’s 1st indigenous bank – 1st National Bank St. Lucia.
This year the Bank’s donation of EC$5000.00 was significant in helping the Nobel Laureate Committee add a new dimension to the week’s activities. It was the performance of popular Plays by the St. Lucian Nobel Laureate Hon Derek Walcott and his twin brother the late Roderick Walcott.
The first performance was “The Joker of Seville” based on a Spanish folk character, El Burlador de Sevilla, whose legend was first written by Tirso de Molina. Hon.Derek Walcott has added a Caribbean aesthetic and context to the legend. The excerpts chosen gave an opportunity to focus on most of the music and songs of this play. The Play deals with issues such as morality, honour, chastity and male/female relations which allowed for lively discussion and interpretation by the members of the Student Performing Arts Company (SPAC). It was directed by Kentillia Louis musically co-ordinated by Petronilla Deterville and Choreographed Barry George.

This Walcott masterpiece was performed at the National Cultural Centre to an enraptured audience comprising the head of the Nobel Laureate Committee Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy, Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King, Lady Gladys Lewis – wife of St. Lucian Nobel Laureate Sir Arthur Lewis. Also in attendance were - the 1st Black African Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Wole Soyinka and the writer of the play himself Hon. Derek Walcott.
The second play, The Harrowing of Benjy written by Roderick Walcott in the 1950s was performed by the Soufriere Action Theatre.
Also featuring on the night was the Royal St. Lucia Police Band publicly releasing for the first time a musical masterpiece “Noble Men” which is a tribute to St. Lucia’s two Nobel Laureates.
Earlier this week Manager of Projects and Services Robert Fevrier presented the cheque to the head of the Nobel Laureate Week Committee Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy. Mr. Fevrier noted that the Bank has over the years clearly positioned itself as a patron of arts in St. Lucia. “1st National Bank recognizing the importance of excellence has been a staple sponsor of Nobel laureate Week. We see this as a week of inspiration and a call to excellence for all. We are indeed proud as an indigenous institution of the achievements of our people wherever they may be; in particular our two Nobel Laureates Sir Arthur Lewis and Hon. Derek Walcott. The Bank’s support of the Arts in St. Lucia is testament to our support of our people, always giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents, build on their self confidence and reach for greatness that which is excellence”, noted Fevrier
