The Caribbean Electric Utility Service Cooperation (CARILEC) Pledges Support to Haiti

CARILEC, the association of Caribbean Electric Utilities and their vending partners pledge to support the restoration efforts in Haiti in the aftermath of Tuesday’s earthquake. Since the disaster, the CARILEC Board of Directors have been in conference calls, deliberating on the best way to offer assistance to the devastated island. EDF Martinique, a CARILEC member, has already deployed two people to Haiti as part of a larger French delegation to assist in the restoration of electricity.
In Today’s meeting of the executive committee it was agreed that despite the fact that Haiti was not a member of CARILEC the association must make a meaningful contribution to the country’s recovery.
CARILEC’s Chairman Mr. Vernon Lawrence, in a brief statement this morning, declared that the association feels compelled to assist Haiti by means of financial, technical and other support. “CARILEC is no stranger to assisting regional utilities with restoration” he said. We are liaising with CDMA and Caricom to find a secure and effective organization through which to coordinate relief to Haiti. In the meantime we have setup a fund to which all members can make monetary donations. Following the assessment and recommendations from the CDMA and Caricom, we will mobilize these resources in the execution of a suitable plan”.

According to Nigel Hosein, CARILEC’s Executive Director, “CARILEC stands willing and ready to help the people of Haiti get back on their feet. Cooperation among CARILEC members during times of crisis reinforces the benefit of collaboration among member countries and that has worked well for us in the past.”
CARILEC, which is based in St. Lucia. comprises most of the Caribbean electric utilities from Bermuda in the north to Surinam in the south. This includes the French and Dutch speaking countries of the region as well as the American overseas islands of Puerto Rico, St Thomas and St Croix. The association has fully functioning disaster management machinery in place to assist members in times of crisis.
In recent years, CARILEC has coordinated disaster recovery efforts to restore electricity to numerous hurricane ravished islands. These include Grenada, Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The association is hoping to use its experience in this regard to help restore normalcy to distressed Haiti.
