J.Q. Charles Group of Companies sponsors a Youth Development Programmme in collaboration with The Ministry of Education and the Peace Corps

Thursday the 28th of January was the official launch of the Why Try programme – a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, the JQ Charles Group of Companies and the Peace Corps. Why Try is an educational initiative that teaches critical life skills to at-risk youth. The programme is centered on the development of personal strength and aims to provide youth with the emotional intelligence to overcome challenges.
Why Try is in response concerning trends in secondary schools including student absenteeism, drop outs, conflict, violence and the use of illegal drugs and alcohol. According to Chief Education Officer, Mrs. Augusta Ifill, the initiative is a creative way of reaching youth at risk. “The program is a strength based approach to helping youth overcome their challenges by using education and interventions that motivate and create positive change. The programme teaches basic life skills…to youth who have problems managing conflicts, dealing with peer pressure and adhering to laws.”
The program was initially implemented at the Vieux Fort Secondary School in 2006 by a Peace Corps volunteer and achieved tremendous success among targeted students. Results included improved conflict resolution skills, reduction in violence and higher grades.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Peace Corps, J.Q.Charles pushed to have this programme expanded. The expansion became a reality with the sponsorship from the company in the amount of US$10,000. ‘Why Try’ is now being piloted in 4 District 2 schools – the Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School, the St. Mary’s College, the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School and the Vide Boutielle Secondary School.
The launching of this initiative coincides with the J.Q. Charles Group of Companies’ 65th Anniversary. C.E.O, Mr. Gordon Charles, views their sponsorship as a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to nation building. “J.Q. Charles has always focused on the development of youth as its goal for any meaningful sponsorship on the island. In our 65th year of operation, we are proud to be involved in activities that tie into the development of our country.” J.Q. Charles has a vision of continuing its sponsorship so that the programme can be introduced to all secondary schools on the island.
