More Police Patrols At SALCC By Day

Stabbing of Canteen Operator By Students Under Investigation

THERE will be additional police patrols on the grounds of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College during school hours following a March 18 stabbing incident involving students and an operator of a mobile canteen that caters to students.

It is alleged that during an altercation with some students, Chef David Remy, the operator of the mobile canteen, sustained a number of stab wounds.

Remy is said to be recuperating and in good spirits. However, the College through its Chairperson of the Board of Governors, Ms. Fortuna Anthony is not taking the incident lightly and have held meetings with the police and other bodies to deal with the matter.

“The alleged perpetrators have been identified and the College has been cooperating fully with the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force in its investigation of this matter,” a release from the College stated.

The College’s principal, Urban Dolor and the acting Police Commissioner Errol Alexander held discussions last week Friday agreeing to the provision of more police patrols on the campus.

The College has gone further to establish a disciplinary committee to review and adjudicate on the incident notwithstanding the investigation by the police.

The Director of Security Services at the College has been directed to fully investigate the matter, the findings of which will inform the work of the disciplinary committee, according to the College.

According to the release from the Office of the College’s principal measures have already been put in place to help mitigate instances of student indiscipline. There are two full-time counsellors to assist and support students with disciplinary issues or those who encounter challenges in coping with life at the tertiary institution. There is also a chaplaincy, established earlier this year with the assistance of faith-based organizations, to provide guidance and support to students.

The College says it is aware that more needs to be done and so, moving forward”. Will continue to work with its staff to address the increasing instances of indiscipline among students at the College,” stated the release.

The College says that it is open to suggestions and assistance from its stakeholders and well-wishers in dealing with the myriad of issues of indiscipline and that its success in addressing those issues redounds not only to its benefit but to the entire country.
