Hectic Year For Rugby – President

THE St Lucia senior male rugby team played unbeaten to emerge champions of the 7-a-side tournament held at the Gros Islet Playing Field on Tuesday under what can best be described as cool conditions.

Four teams participated in the opening event of the packed 2015 calendar of activities of the St. Lucia Rugby Football Union.

The participating teams were St. Lucia, Zandolie, Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and the sailors from the visiting warship; HMS Severn.

Team St. Lucia commenced its rout by overwhelming SALCC 24-10 and 24-0 in men and ladies action, and followed this with comprehensive wins by the male team over HMS Severn, 68 – 0 and Zandolie, 24 – 7. HMS Severn emerged runners up with two wins and one defeat, while SALCC, comprising students from the nation’s tertiary learning institution, placed third ahead of Zandolie.

The SALCC team played extremely well and there were some magnificent performances from some of the SALCC female players who only just started playing a few short months ago.

President of the SLRFU Clovis Samuels said, “The way is now set for a hectic year which continues with matches in the senior male Caribbean 15-a-side championship in February, March and April against St.Vincent and the Grenadines, the British Virgin Islands, and Curacao. There will be visits by Diamante and US Robert of Martinique and a return visit by St. Lucia to the neighbouring island”.

He added: “The high point of the year will be the North America and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) 7-a-side tournament in North Carolina on June 13 – 14, where both male and female teams will be competing against teams from the region”.
