St. Cecilia’s at Canon Laurie

THE Canon Laurie Anglican Primary School dedicated the day before the weekend celebration of the Feast of Musicians, St. Cecilia’s Day for students to enjoy the beauty and fun of music.

The event took place on site at the school on Friday where the 334 students along with their teachers gathered in an upstairs hall to be treated to a day of musical enjoyment.

Students of the neighbouring Methodist School were special invited guests performers.

Some of the features of the show included singing by students and teachers, a musical number from invited guest students of the Gordon Walcott Memorial Methodist School Choir and the Royal St. Lucia Police Band.

Music teacher ,Sonacia James told The VOICE that the Canon Laurie school is bursting with musical talent and it is a passionate subject that is highly encouraged and participated in.

James said; “There are so many musically inclined students at this school it’s amazing. They all want to sing and play the instruments and they’re just always enthusiastic about my music class, so I thought we should have a day where we do music only. With the principal’s permission we got time off class and we just did music”.

One student who stood out on the day was grade four Madasia Augustin, who currently holds the title as the National Schools Solo Singing Champion. She competed last year against students from schools all over the island and came out on top as the second youngest performer. The nine year old delivered a heartfelt and soulful rendition of gospel song “Take Me To The King” leaving many with mouths agape and goosebumps.

Augustin, who is seemingly born to be a performer said in the case of her booming talent, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. “It’s started when my grandmother was little, then my mother grew up to be just like her and she taught me. When I was a baby, she would teach me to sing. I got better then Ms Fontenelle (her vocal coach) started teaching me and I got even better at doing it and now, my mother tells me that I have the voice of my grandmother.”

Augustin said she has been performing publicly since the age of seven.

Although, according to James, the school celebrates the day of music annually, this was the first of hopefully many times where the entire day will be dedicated the occasion.
